European Roulette

is a game played on a wheel with 37 pockets. These pockets contain the numbers 1 through 36, as well as a single-zero. This is the version invented and made famous by Francois and Louis Blanc when they still owned casinos in Germany in the 1840s.

When the Blanc Brothers moved their casino to Monte Carlo in the 1860s, their version of the game became the prevalent one across Europe, and throughout the European colonies around the globe. That legacy remains alive today, as European Roulette dominates in Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia, and Latin America. Becoming a globally recognized online game, it can be found at many of the top online casinos with live dealers.

The house edge for European Roulette is 2.70%. If you use the “la partage” (of the parts) or “en prison” (imprisonment) rules, the house edge is lowered to 1.35%. The fact it has the lowest house edge only strengthens the appeal of European Roulette, assuring it remains most widespread in the Internet Age. This has quickly become the most popular online varitation with live dealers version found at online casinos, so players can take full advantage of this.

Pros of American Roulette

  • The best odds available.
  • Found in more casinos worldwide.
  • Game people know the best.
  • Often has advantageous house rules.
  • Any bet has the same odds.

Cons of American Roulette

  • Not available in all American live casinos.

Online roulette in live casinos

Over the years online roulette has become more and more popular thanks to new technology that offers roulette tables with real live dealers. Live roulette is offered by several online casinos that specialise in this area and make real tables filmed by webcams that transmit online roulette games live available to players.

Most of the time studios act as casinos and several roulette tables are open to welcome online players from all over the world. There are also roulette tables filmed in real land based casinos (Hippodrome Casino London, Saint-Vincent Casino in Italy, , Grand Casino Bucharest, International Casino Georgia, Fitzwilliam Casino Dublin, Platinum Casino Romania).

Live DealerВ Roulette Bets

Those who have never played online live games might need a quick tutorial. Read through the basic information below to get a rudimentary idea. It is easy to play, because no strategy is required, and it is still true for the live casino version. When playing European Roulette, each bet has a 2.70% house edge. Choose the right size bet for you and begin to play.

The European Roulette wheel has 37 numbers, including the 0 and the numbers 1 through 36. For numbers 1-10 and 9-28, the odd numbers are Red and the even numbers are Black. For numbers 11-18 and 29-36, the odd numbers are Black and the even numbers are Red. The 0-slot is green.

The live roulette table has a grid of single numbers which are arranged in a three 12-number columns or twelve 3-number rows, however you wish to look at it. These rows/columns contain the numbers 1 through 36 in a sequence. At the top of the column is a green box with a 0 inside it.

Inside Bets

Bets placed among the individual numbers are called inside bets, because they are placed inside the imaginary box which contains the grid of numbers. These include single (straight) bets, split bets on two numbers, street bets on three number, corner and top line bets containing four numbers, and a 6-line bet which covers two streets (rows). The inside bets have bigger payouts (5:1 up to 35:1), but have smaller odds of winning.

BETPAYOUTDESCRIPTION
Single Number35:1A wager on any single number.
Split Bets17:1A bet on two adjacent numbers, placed on the line separating them.
Street Bets11:1A bet on three numbers on one single row. Examples: 1-2-3 or 7-8-9.
Basket Bet11:1A bet on three numbers involving the zero. Examples: 0-1-2 or 0-2-3.
Corner Bet8:1A bet on four numbers, placed at the corner where they intersect.
Six-Line Bet5:1Placed on two adjacent streets, therefore covering six numbers.
Top Line Bet6:1Available only in American Roulette, it is a 5-number wager on the 0-00-1-2-3. Never wager on this, as it’s house edge is 7.9%.

Outside Bets

Bets placed outside the number boxes are called outside bets. These include a broader category of wagers, covering either 12-number or 18-number bets. The 12-number bets are called “thirds” bets because they cover a third of the numbers between 1 and 36. Column bets also contain a third or a dozen numbers and have the same 2:1 odds.

The 18-number wagers are called even-money bets because they pay 1:1 when you win. These include one-half of the numbers and come in a number of varieties.

BETPAYOUTDESCRIPTION
Column Bet2:1A 12-number wager placed at the bottom of one of the three columns of numbers.
Dozen Bets2:1A 12-number wager placed on one dozen numbers: 1-12, 13-24, or 25-36.
Hi/Lo Bets1:1One of the even-money bets, this is a wager on whether the number lands between 1-18 or 19-36.
Odd/Even Bet1:1Another of the even-money bets, this is a wager on whether the ball lands on an odd or even number.
Red/Black Bet1:1The third even-money bet, this is a wager on whether the ball lands on red or black.

Even-money wagers are interesting for live roulette gamblers because many casinos offer the “en prison” and “la partage” wagers with these. En-prison is French for “in prison” or “imprisoned”. It refers to a rule which places a player’s bet in prison for a hand if the ball landed on the zero slot. The bet carries over to the next hand. If you win, you collect the imprisoned bet. If you lose, then the house collects the current bet, plus the imprisoned one. La partage has the same effect, except the casino simply takes half your bet, instead of the whole thing. Either rule cuts the house edge in half, but only on the even-money wagers. If a casino offers “en prison” or “la partage” rules, only wager on the even-money bets.

Handling the Zero Bet

The way a game of roulette (live or otherwise) handles its zero slots is the key to its odds. Notice that all outside bets lose when the ball lands on the zero. This creates the house edge because you receive a 35:1 payout when you win, but you face 1:36 odds of winning. The difference between the two is what the casino uses to pay employees and invest in new attractions.

Different types of bets

Inside Bets:

  • Straight Up Bet (Pays 35 to 1). Place your bet directly on a single number (including the zero). You will win if the ball lands on that number.
  • Split Bet (Pays 17 to 1). Place your bet on the line between any two connected numbers, either horizontally or vertically. If the ball lands on either number, you will receive a pay-out.
  • Street Bet (Pays 11 to 1). Place your bet on the line of one of the horizontal rows (contains three numbers). Should the ball land on any of the three numbers, this bet is a winner.
  • Trio Bet (Pays 11 to 1). Place your bet on a three-numbered corner that includes the 0; you’ll bet on either 0, 1 and 2 or 0, 2 and 3 and win if any of these numbers hit.
  • Corner Bet (Pays 8 to 1). Place your bet in the corner of where four numbers meet. Your wager covers all four numbers.
  • Line Bet (Pays 5 to 1).  Place your bet on the corner of two streets (two connected horizontal rows). Your wager covers six numbers.

Outside Bets:

  • Red/Black (Pays 1 to 1). Place your bet on the Red or Black box to cover the 18 red or black numbers.
  • Odd/Even (Pays 1 to 1). Place your bet on the Odd or Even box to cover the 18 odd or even numbers.
  • High/Low (Pays 1 to 1). Place your bet on the 1-18 or 19-36 box to cover the low or high numbers.
  • Column Bet (Pays 2 to 1). Place your bet on one of the ‘2 to 1’ boxes at the far end of the table to cover all of the numbers in that column.
  • Dozen Bet (Pays 2 to 1). Place your bet in one of the boxes marked «1st 12», «2nd 12», or «3rd 12» to cover the 12 numbers in that section.

The theoretical return to player (RTP) for Live Roulette is 97.30%.

How Live Dealer Roulette Works

If you have ever played online roulette before, the interface for live roulette typically is none too different. The main difference is that once you have placed your bet, you see a live dealer pick up the ball and physically spin it around the rotating wheel. In most cases, the dealer is being streamed live from a real roulette table featured at a casino somewhere in the world. Apart from the fact that you will be sitting in front of a computer screen, this style of roulette is identical to driving to a casino and laying down chips yourself.

Roulette Cheats в Can you cheat and win at Live Roulette

Cheaters have learned ways to beat the casino and these can be used when playing live roulette. OUSC does not recommend it. The fact we know of these forms of cheating is an indication that the scam artists were caught. As they say, the best cheaters never get caught. For entertainment purposes, IвЂll detail the strategies used by roulette cheats.

Wheel Tracking

Some people claim that mechanical roulette wheels are biased. Due to an imbalance, these wheels produce certain winning numbers more often. By tracking the long term results, this imbalance can be spotted and exploited. Wheel trackers claim the bias might be big enough to make roulette into a positive expectation game.

Wheel tracking sounds less viable than it might once have been. These days, casinos have a lot of mechanical and electronic means to discover and fix imbalances. No one tracks results better than the casino, which would fix an imbalance fairly quickly. does not discount biases but says they probably would be more likely in Europe. In an online casino, wheel tracking is impossible.

Ball Steering

Those who propound ball steering theories, like the respectable Arnold Snyder, suggest dealers can steer the ball to a certain part of the wheel. By having a confederate bet on that section of the wheel, a dealer can help a player win more than they lose, then split the profits with them later. Because other gamblers at the wheel would lose according to the house edge, the casino would remain profitable and not be any the wiser.

This theory has several fallacies. Steering the ball would be much harder these days, as the ball bounces once it hits the wheel. Also, obstacles are found between the wheel and the slots, making it harder to control. Since such schemes are never revealed, the lack of scandal suggests ball steering is unlikely.

Top Hatting

Top hatting is a known scam that involves the dealer. In top hatting, chips are placed on the winning number after the results are known. This usually involves the active participation of the dealer, either to overlook sleight-of-hand by a gambler or to actively place the chips on numbers themselves.

Several cases of top hatting have been revealed in the past 20 years. While it seems rudimentary, top hatting worked for one group for 20 years.

Betting System Fallacies

While there are a lot of claims that betting systems can beat the house, the reality is that nobody has ever achieved this feat over the long term. Systems like Martingale betting (stake doubling) may reduce some of the variances in the short run though users eventually hit a run which sees them go broke. If you have any doubt, then simply ask yourself why casinos welcome users of these systems at the same time as coming down hard on Blackjack card counters who operate on supposedly much thinner margins.

Warning Against Cheating

It goes without saying that this kind of cheating is inadvisable. Wheel tracking, ball steering, and top hatting are not strategies, but cheats. These are not the only methods used by cheaters. Wheel gaffing and ball magnets have been tried in the past, too. This goes to show that dealer help is the way scam artists milk the casino.

Cheats have no place in online or mobile gambling. Cheats also have no place in a live casino on the Internet, in which the dealers are playing at a location 5,000 to 10,000 miles away, in most cases.

As this entire section shows, strategies are few and far between, as it is a game of chance. The best online roulette tips are to chuck all the betting techniques, gamblerвЂs fallacies, and wild ideas.

Steps to Play Live Casino Roulette

To play live dealer roulette online, you’ll need to find an online casino which supports this style of gambling. While that might be easy for someone in Europe, live casinos are featured less often in the United States. Top software providers like RealTime Gaming do not support live studios, so gamblers need to find websites which use Evolution Gaming or Vivo Gaming. Most sites that have a live casino advertise it on their homepage.

American Roulette

ItвЂs natural to assume the European version of a game is older, but more closely resembles the original version of the game, which used two zero pockets instead of one. In its long isolation from the world in North America in the 19th and 20th centuries, the double-zero variation became synonymous with Las Vegas, and thus America.

American Roulette is a version of the game played on a wheel with 38 pockets. These pockets contain the numbers 1 through 36, as well as a single-zero (0) and double-zero (00) slots. Because an additional pocket is added to the spinning wheel, it means that the even-money wagers are less likely to win.

This increases the house edge to 5.26%, which is not good. Players should avoid American Online Roulette if they have the opportunity. In Atlantic City, casinos are required by New Jersey law to include la partage rules. For this reason, the house edge on the game in Atlantic City is 2.63%. Those are slightly better odds than the traditional version of European Roulette, so there are times when American Roulette is a better game and is a popular live dealer game.

Pros of American Roulette

  • Available in most US-friendly live casinos.
  • Common at English language sites.
  • A version of the game most Americans are familiar with.

Cons of American Roulette

  • Significantly worse odds.
  • Can trick some Americans who think all things USA are best.

Notable Variations of American Roulette

The United States is large enough that it has produced a few variations all their own. Rapid Roulette and California Roulette are two such variants.

Rapid Roulette

The New Jersey law which require la partage rules may have fueled the rise of Rapid Roulette, an electronic form of the game. Rapid Roulette speeds up the game, so the players face the house edge more times per hour. On average, a player is going to lose more on Rapid Roulette than standard American Roulette.

California Roulette

In 2004, the California State Legislature legalized a form of roulette in which results are determined with cards and not pockets on a wheel. The croupier spins a wheel containing the numbers 1 through 38, the 0-slot, and the 00-slot. When the wheel stops, a pointer points at the winning number, much like the big wheel on The Price Is Right game show. All other rules are the same.

Live Roulette — Basic Rules and Betting limits

In Live Roulette, the wheel contains 37 pockets, numbered zero to 36. You can make any combination of bets, on both individual numbers and groups of numbers, and all these bets are placed on the part of the table known as the ‘inside section’.

On the ‘outside section’, you can place wagers on a variety of matching pairs of bets, each of which covers 18 numbers. From high or low numbers, odd or even, and red or black, there are a number of different options available.

On various parts of a Live Roulette table, you can also choose from six different 12-number bets, or ‘column’ and ‘dozen bets’, as well as different 17-number bets.
